Midwife gently performing a newborn exam

mother. folk.

Mother is at the center of midwifery care. “Midwife” means with woman, and this shows up as deep listening, curiosity, and collaborative, informed decision-making. It means holding space for the spiritual, emotional, and physical transformation that comes with each pregnancy, while honoring the mother as the primary decision-maker in her care.

Folk means common people—care that belongs to the people. This looks like belly mapping together so families understand baby’s position, making space for questions and real conversation, and using language everyone in the room can follow. It means that care is collaborative instead of managed. It means slowing down enough to notice what’s unfolding, honoring intuition alongside clinical skill, and remembering that birth is not just something that happens to you, but something you are actively a part of.

A B O U T M E

My name is Johanna Joy.

A woman with tattoos on her left arm and curly hair, wearing a sleeveless top, is holding a cloth bag over a bed with a brown blanket. The room has a wooden ceiling, a cream-colored textured wall, and a dresser with various items, including a TV mounted on the wall behind her.

Call me Jo.

I was called by things deep and mysterious to be a midwife. My training and apprenticeships with powerful women inform how I provide attentive care for the whole of you… honoring the physical, the emotional, and the spiritual power of pregnancy.

Birth Happens

This energy-blurred image is among the most powerful photos I’ve ever been a part of. Just moments before, this mother wondered aloud if she was doing something wrong. Then, suddenly, her water broke and both parents reached out, catching their baby together.

Every birth is its own story, each one bringing us closer to life, to instinct, to truth, and when we let it… to divinity.
